White-fronted Tern

            Scientific name: Sterna striata
Maori name: Tara
The White-fronted Tern is found widespread on New Zealand coastlines. It is protected and classified as a native.
Identifiable markings are their elongated black, monk-like caps, deeply forked rails and jet-black bills and feet. Graceful in the flight often hovering over feeding and nesting sites before landing. Their diet is exclusively marine, taking small fish like pilchards, anchovies, piper and shrimps, capturing these by plunge-diving from a hovering flight a few metres above the surface of the sea. 
Breeding from October to February in tightly packed nesting colonies sited on shingle or rock shelves, sandy beaches, dunes, shellbanks and steep cliffs. Pair bonds are formed for many years and pairs tend to return to the colonies where they were born. The nests are set on bare ground, sometimes among tufts of sand vegetation, and one or two eggs are laid, producing peppery-sand-coloured chicks. Adults continue to feed their young for about three months after leaving the colony.
