Brazos River sofa, Newcastle, Texas - a photo on Flickriver

            This was in shallow water on the upstream side of the old steel bridge. The new RT 380 bridge is 150 yards north of this spot, and if anyone wanted to end their life, it would be a good spot from which to take a swan dive if the river was low. This sofa wasn't a "jumper". It didn't fall off a trailer and bounce into the river. I suspect someone dumped it over the railing because hauling it to a legitimate dump was too inconvenient. It must have made the drop when the river was a bit higher, and floated down to the drift pile at the steel bridge. It had company when it landed. Sitting in the mud below the new bridge at the time I photographed this was...  a washing machine, a microwave oven, a large lockable cooler (broken open), and what looked like a sewing machine. None of this stuff made a "soft landing". If it was junk before it went air-borne, it was far junkier after the short flight down to the river. Illegal dumping along back roads is a major problem in rural areas. The most common items discarded seem to be mattresses and old televisions. Almost any time I walk along the Brazos River downstream from a bridge, if I look hard enough, I can find corroding printed wiring boards from a variety of electronic devices, definitely not good for the environment.
