Bad glass, Young County, Texas - a photo on Flickriver

            Taken in mid-September of 2017, here's a junk car (one of many), in a huge collection of old cars, trucks, gas station signs, gas pumps and other eye-catching material on the north side of RT 380, a bit over four miles east of Newcastle. Located between the intersection of RT380 at Indian Mound Road and the bridge at Kindley Park, this "junk yard" is something nobody could miss seeing when traveling between Newcastle and Graham. We had always wanted to stop and get some photos here but never seemed to have the time. One day that wasn't too hot we decided to park along side the highway and photograph what we could through the chain link fence separating the property from the road. By putting the camera lens right up against the fence, centering the viewfinder image to avoid most of what appeared as very fuzzy fence material at the edge of the frame, it was just possible to get a decent image.

We spent about an hour working back and forth along the fence, covering nearly the full length of the collection... nearly 700 yards, when a truck stopped partway into the driveway leading to a house inside the fence. The driver asked what we were up to. We mentioned we were from Massachusetts, were staying in Newcastle and decided to stop and get what photos we could from outside the fence. We had heard that this place and the owner, the fellow we were talking to, were going to be featured on an episode of "American Pickers". They were... we watched the show a year later. I remember the "pickers" got very few items from the guy, almost everything that interested them was priced far above what they wanted to shell out, and there was no haggling. 

The owner passed away a few years ago and it didn't take long for ALL the classy stuff strewn about the property to vanish. There must have been a huge auction that must have drawn a large crowd. The only things remaining are an old yellow VW bus sitting high on a hilltop, and a few trailer truck boxes that were used to transport mildly radioactive oil drilling pipe and other junk, waiting to be properly disposed of.
