Blanerne Castle (12 of 12) - a photo on Flickriver

            There's an old rhyme that goes:

"Buncle, Billy, and Blanerne, 
Three castles strong as airn ; 
Built when Davy was a bairn ; 
They'll a' gang doon 
wi' Scotland's croon, 
And ilka ane shall be a cairn." 

The Davy referred to is King David II, who was born in 1324 - which if the rhyme is factual, would tie in with the first castle here having been built by Gilbert Lumsden following his marriage to the Blanerne heiress in 1329.  The other two castles referred to 'Bunkle' (as Bonkyll is pronounced) and Billie (which both form an almost perfect triangle with Blanerne) are indeed little more than cairns now.  Blanerne is the most complete survivor.  Whether Scotland's crown has 'ganged doon' or not is a matter of opinion!

Blanerne House is currently operated as a guest house, offering access to fishing and game shooting.  I believe it is owned by Gillem Lumsden of that Ilk and Blanerne, who now resides near Newbury, Berkshire.
