Houston House (5 of 5) - a photo on Flickriver

            I notice, with wry amusement, that the hotel's website proudly boasts that the house was built in the 16th century and was "once visited by Mary Queen of Scots."  Unfortunately, she had been dead for a dozen years or so when the castle was finished in 1601, which we know because its builder, Sir John Shairp, wrote in 1600 "the mansion house, biggings, and fortalice begun to be built, and, God willing, to be finished as soon as possible!"  I'm currently at the same stage in a house build myself, so I know how Sir John felt!!
