9F at Gloucester - a photo on Flickriver

9F at Gloucester

            Class 9F no 92203 hauls a lengthy northbound freight through Tramway Junction, Gloucester, on 14 August 1965. Gloucester Eastgate station is to the left of the loco, and Gloucester Cathedral is visible above the second and third wagon of this freight, which has come from South Wales. Taken on my Brownie 127 camera - I would have been 13 when I took this.

The working life of this loco was shamefully short - it was built in 1959, and withdrawn from service just 8 years later. No 92203 was purchased direct from BR by the artist David Shepherd, and received the name "Black Prince". I travelled behind "Black Prince" on a railtour in 1973 and the loco has since worked at several preservation sites. I believe it is currently based on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway.
