"North Star" at Newport - a photo on Flickriver

            D1661, named "North Star", on an up express at Newport. This is another picture taken from scanning one of the large format negatives taken with my father's folding Voightlander camera. I think it was taken in 1969, but I have absolutely no other details despite a thorough examination of my notebooks. I was thinking of cropping off the right hand platform (Platform 6!), but I like the way that the old chap is looking round, either at the loco or at the pw gang busy in the background.

D1661, built in 1965, would become 47077 under TOPS, and then 47613 when fitted with eth in May 1984. In November 1989 it was renumbered to 47840, in which form it was withdrawn from service in May 2007. 47840 is now preserved by the DEPG on the West Somerset Railway.
