At the Kent and East Sussex Railway - a photo on Flickriver

            A scene at Rolvenden shed on the K&ESR on 18 August 1986. On  the left is "Charwelton", built by Manning Wardle in 1917 (Works number 1955) and on the right is former-SR "USA" class 0-6-0T no. 30065.

30065 was built in 1943 by Vulcan Ironworks in Pennsylvania for use by the War Dept, and entered service bearing number 1968. It was sold to the SR in 1947 and sent to work in Southampton docks. The SR gave it the number 65, and this became 30065 when the loco passed to BR in 1948. It was replaced in Southampton docks by diesel shunters in 1962 and was transferred into departmental service for work in Ashford wagons works, carrying the number DS237 and  the name "Maunsell".

It was replaced by diesels at Ashford in 1967 and it, and sister loco DS238 (ex-30070) were sold for scrap to Woodham Bros in Barry. But both locos were deemed unfit to travel from Tonbridge and were dumped at the old Tonbridge steam shed until September 1968, when they moved into preservation at the K&ESR. No. 30065 was returned to steam in 1974 and worked until 1990, when it needed a thorough overhaul. It returned to steam in 1997 and worked until 2017, when a further overhaul was necessary. Work on this overhaul is now under way.

"Charwelton" was built by Manning Wardle in 1917 (works number  1955) for Parkgate Iron and Steel Co, at Charwelton in Northants. It worked at this location for 25 years and then its owner transferred it in 1942 to work at another of the company's sites, at Sproxton in Lincs. This site closed in 1963 and the loco was bought for preservation by the KESR Trust, who moved it to Rolvenden in January 1964.

"Charwelton" was withdrawn with boiler problems in 2017 and is currently being overhauled.
