The 16.37 to Corby - 1 - a photo on Flickriver

            The 16.37 Kettering - Corby departs from Kettering on 25 May 1990, during the last week of service of the experimental Kettering-Corby service. Corby station had been closed in May 1967, but was re-opened on an experimental basis in April 1987. This service was withdrawn as from 2 June 1990. The closure left Corby as, allegedly, the largest town in Europe without a rail service, and, in the ensuing years, there were various proposals for trains to serve Corby once again. But it would be nearly 19 years until East Midlands Trains re-introduced a regular service, including through trains to London, to the town.

The dmu providing the service in my photo is a 2-car Class 108 set based at Bletchley (BY). Both vehicles had, when new, been based in the Manchester area. 53628 dates from December 1958 and 54279 from March 1960. They were re-allocated to Reading (RG) in October 1991, where they formed set L212, and were withdrawn from service during 1993.

Both vehicles are now preserved. 53628 was originally purchased by the Great Western Society, and went to Southall. It is now based at the Keith ad Dufftown Railway, where it isopersational, and usually paired with 56224.

54279 operated on the Barry Island Railway, and later the Lavender Line. It is currently owned by a reclamation company and is at a private site near Norwich, where it faces an uncertain future.
