GCR Gala 1995 - 2

            Bulleid "West Country" 4-6-2 no. 34039 "Boscastle" receives some light maintenance outside Loughborough shed on 25 June 1995 during a GCR Gala.

No 34039 was built at Brighton in September 1946 and was originally numbered 21C139. It was withdrawn from Eastleigh depot in September 1965 and was towed to Barry for scrapping. In January 1973 it became the 33rd loco to leave Barry for preservation. It was moved to the Great Central Railway, where it was the subject of a protracted overhaul to return it to steam. This was achieved in November 1992, when "Boscastle" moved under its own power for the first time in 27 years. It was taken out of service in June 2000 for a further overhaul. This overhaul was nearing completion and another return to steam was expected during 2022, but the project received a setback when parts for Boscastle, worth £50,000 were stolen from a container at Loughborough. The boiler for 34039 was moved to Quorn during June 2025 so that work on restoration of this loco could resume.
