Il Montasio è un formaggio tipico che è ufficialmente tutelato dal 1955. Ha ottenuto la Denominazione di Origine nel 1986 e nel giugno 1996 la speciale certificazione DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) dall’Unione Europea.
Questo formaggio prende il nome dal massiccio del Montasio in Friuli. È stato prodotto nei pascoli estivi del massiccio fin dal diciottesimo secolo, grazie alla cura amorevole dei monaci benedettini dell’Abbazia di Moggio Udinese. Da allora, la maestria della produzione del Montasio si è diffusa nelle Alpi Carniche e Giulie fino a raggiungere le pianure del Friuli e del Veneto. Attualmente, le principali zone di produzione si trovano nelle province di Udine, Pordenone, Gorizia, Trieste, Treviso, Belluno e in alcune aree delle province di Padova e Venezia, sempre tenendo fede alla ricetta tradizionale del diciottesimo secolo.

HERE THE CHEESE IS AT HOME

Montasio is a typical cheese that has been officially protected since 1955. It obtained the Designation of Origin in 1986 and in June 1996 the special DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) certification from the European Union.
This cheese takes its name from the Montasio massif in Friuli. It has been produced in the summer pastures of the massif since the eighteenth century, thanks to the loving care of the Benedictine monks of the Moggio Udinese Abbey. Since then, the mastery of Montasio production has spread to the Carnic and Julian Alps until it reaches the plains of Friuli and Veneto. Currently, the main production areas are found in the provinces of Udine, Pordenone, Gorizia, Trieste, Treviso, Belluno and in some areas of the provinces of Padua and Venice, always keeping faith with the traditional recipe of the eighteenth century.
