Il Castello di Udine è uno dei principali monumenti della città ed è situato in cima ad un colle nel centro storico, a 138 m s.l.m.
La prima notizia documentata della presenza di un edificio sul colle è del 983: in quell'anno il castrum, una fortificazione militare, venne donato dall'imperatore Ottone II al Patriarca di Aquileia Rodoaldo.
L'edificio odierno sorge al posto di una fortezza costruita dagli stessi Patriarchi di Aquileia e distrutta dal terremoto del 1511. La costruzione della struttura oggi visibile ha avuto inizio nel 1517 e i lavori durarono oltre 50 anni. Di Giovanni da Udine, allievo di Raffaello, sono le rifiniture esterne e le decorazioni del Salone del Parlamento, completate in seguito alla sua morte dal Floreani.
Nel Salone del Parlamento si riuniva il consiglio della Patria del Friuli, uno dei primi esempi di parlamento al mondo, durato fino all'occupazione napoleonica del 1797.
Il castello è oggi la sede dei Civici Musei di Udine. Le sale del palazzo sono spesso sede di esposizioni temporanee.

The Castle of Udine is one of the main monuments of the city and is located on top of a hill in the historic centre, at 138 m above sea level.
The first documented news of the presence of a building on the hill dates back to 983: in that year the castrum, a military fortification, was donated by Emperor Otto II to the Patriarch of Aquileia Rodoaldo.
The current building stands on the site of a fortress built by the Patriarchs of Aquileia themselves and destroyed by the earthquake of 1511. The construction of the structure visible today began in 1517 and the works lasted over 50 years. By Giovanni da Udine, a pupil of Raphael, are the external finishes and decorations of the Hall of Parliament, completed following his death by Floreani.
The council of the Patria del Friuli met in the Parliament Hall, one of the first examples of parliament in the world, which lasted until the Napoleonic occupation of 1797.
The castle is now the headquarters of the Civic Museums of Udine. The halls of the building are often home to temporary exhibitions.
