Scarborough Hospital - a photo on Flickriver

            The hospital was opened by the Duke of Kent on 23 October 1936 to replace a Victorian hospital in the town centre. The hospital was designed by Wallace Marchment who had designed a number of hospitals in the inter war period. 

The hospital joined the NHS in 1948 and has since expanded. The original building is of the 1930s 'Streamline Moderne' and resembles public buildings found in Middlesex which themselves have strong influences from The Netherlands.    

In 1988 an extension provided a 'nucleus hospital' type building with two cruciform shaped templates using the standardised sign found in a number of NHS hospitals during the period. In 2024 a new Emergency Department was completed which also includes a new Critical Care Unit with the most up to date healthcare equipment.
