Wheaton 1953 or Union 2023?

            Chicago, Aurora & Elgin cars 309 and 36 head west out of the yard into the rolling fields of the rural countryside.

The above sentence describing this picture would be as true in 1953 as it was in 2023.  While taken at the Illinois Railway Museum during Showcase Weekend in 2023, everything in the scene could very well place it on the west side of CA&E's hometown of Wheaton, IL in the 1950s.  Everything that is save for the absence of the third rail, which the CA&E was known for.

Showcase Weekend is usually when IRM runs less-frequently run equipment.  One of thethe signature events during Showcase Weekend is night operations, often times going past midnight. IRM usually only operates after 6pm twice per year (Labor Day & Showcase Weekends) unless their are scheduled ticketed photo shoots.  So Showcase Weekend is already special.  But the 2023 Showcase Weekend was meant to be truly special:  it would be the grand celebration of the museum's 70th anniversary.  In celebration, it would see two big "firsts:"  First, for the first time ever, the museum would operate all through the night and into the dawn, for a total of 36 straight hours.  And second, breakfast would be served on board the dining car of IRM's marquee Nebraska Zephyr.
