            Looking westward, the sun has set over the Panamint Mountains, lightning strikes in the distance, a thunderstorm rolls into Badwater Basin- - -the lowest point in North America at 282 feet / 85.5 meters below sea level. Badwater Basin is an endorheic basin: a closed drainage basin with no external outflow (rivers or oceans) that loses water primarily through evaporation. Evaporation creates the characteristic salt flat / salt pan- - -yes, the ground tastes like salt. Badwater Basin is a remnant of the Holocene era Lake Manly.
A Singh-Ray two stop soft graduated neutral density filter was used to balance the 3 second exposure.
