St. of Sts. Holy Virgin Mary Church - a photo on Flickriver

            This church is the seat of the Patriarchate of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.  It was built by the Coptic Bishop Abune Mattewos, who arrived as Bishop of Shewa during the reign of Emperor Yohannes IV in 1881, crowned Emperor Menelik II in 1889 becoming Archbishop of all Ethiopia, and served as the Primate of the Ethiopian Church through the reigns of Menelik II, Lij Iyasu and well into the reign of Empress Zewditu.  The church served as the Archbishop's personal church and location of his residence, and continued to serve as such after the elevation of the position to a Patriarchate.  This photograph dates from the early 1930's.
