Chicago Warehouse & Terminal lakefront filling 2

            Between about 1912 and 1930, the Chicago Tunnel Company (through affiliate Chicago Warehouse & Terminal Company) brought materials (spoil and ash) to the massive Lakefront filling project then in progress, helping create the famous Lakefront park space we know today. 

Between 1917 and about 1925 they used 7 Baldwin gasoline-powered locomotives (the dumping operation was "above ground" only), two of which are seen here. IC's Central Station and other buildings along Michigan Ave. appear in the background. Around 1925 they began using modified electric locomotives instead. Today this location is underneath Lake Shore Drive.
