Tynemouth - a photo on Flickriver

Tynemouth

            Tynemouth station was built in 1882 and is almost 100 years older than Metro Car 4032 which is arriving with a St James bound service.

The station was built by the North Eastern Railway to the design of it's architect William Bell. Designed to capitalise on the popularity of trips to the seaside the station had several platforms. Despite becoming run down by the 1970's, the station has been revived during the Metro era. The disused bay platforms, once filled with holiday trains, now provide a home to a weekend market.

It's unlikely that Metro car (Class 994) 4032 will have such a positive future. The trusty Metro-Cammell built units have served the Metro well since opening, but with the replacement class 555's starting to make their presence felt on the network the end of the line isn't too far away.
