De Havilland DH89 Dragon Rapide - a photo on Flickriver

            I have always loved the Dragon Rapide, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to photograph this one at Old Warden last week. I believe this aircraft is privately owned, but stored at the collection.

Although the term would not have existed at the time of the company's operation, I am definitely a De Havilland fanboy. I cannot immediately think of a DH aircraft that I do not like. It fascinates me that the same company designed early pre-WW1 biplanes, right up to the first jet airliner, the De Havilland Comet airliner. Then there's the predecessor namesake, the DH88 Comet Racer that I posted the other day, the legendary Tiger Moth and the famous Mosquito. I am not sure that any other aircraft manufacturer in British history had such continued and diverse success and I lament the fact that through the misguided, in my opinion, policy of nationalisation, the British aircraft industry, and companies like De Havilland, disappeared.

I am a huge fan of interwar art and design in general, be it vehicles, posters or architecture. To me, the Rapide is the epitome of a small airliner of the era and I think it still looks classy today.

I'm getting to grips with the Z5, but I did find the white balance in this hangar in particular quite difficult, with the Tungsten lights. I think this colour cast is reasonably authentic from the day.
