Sunbathing Steamies - a photo on Flickriver

There were a number of steam locomotives fired up and operating, as well as one electric and a diesel or two.

In the foreground is R711, one of the R Class locomotives built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow. The R classes had a relatively short service life, as they were rapidly superseded by diesels and relegated to local goods services. Post-retirement, R711 spent some time on display in a municipal park in Bendigo, before returning to mainline steam at the turn of this century on regular, scheduled services between Melbourne and Warrnambool. It seems the private company that had tendered for the route at the time of privatisation made a go of it for a few years before one of the locomotives failed. R711 burns oil, rather than coal. I previously photographed this locomotive as it passed through Morwell on the Snow Train, back in 2019.

Working up a sweat in the background of this image, we see K140 pulling a mixed freight set back and forth in the yard for photo opportunities. The K class locomotives were one of the most successful in Victorian Railway history, operating in most capacities and across most of the network. Numerous examples exist in preservation. These locomotives were designed and built at the Newport Workshops between 1922 and 1946. The local railway in Mornington operated K163, which has featured recently on my photo stream.
