Fred Abbot, a General's Son, July 13, 1862

Carte de visite by James McClees of Philadelphia, Pa. Frederic Vaughan Abbot, born in Massachusetts, posed with a toy sword for this portrait a few months after his fourth birthday. The back is inscribed with his name and the date July 13, 1862. About a year earlier, his father, West Pointer Henry Larcom Abbot, suffered a wound at the First Battle of Bull Run. He recovered and went on to a long career in the U.S. Army Engineer and ranked a brigadier general upon his retirement. He died in 1927 at age 96.

Abbot followed his father to West Point, graduating first in the Class of 1879. He went on to a distinguished career in the Army's Engineer Corps. As a brigadier general in World War I, he assisted the Chief of Engineers, and received the Army Distinguished Service Medal in recognition of his wartime contributions. He died at age 70 in 1928, only a year after his father passed.
