Crescent Occultation Images Through Clear Apertures Formed by The Leaves

            You can see the crescent images during the moon's occultation of the sun.

Why do we have crescent images?
Pinhole type apertures are formed by the spacing between the tree leaves. These images are crescents because the sun's disk during the moon's passage across the sun forms a very bright crescent.  

Why are the crescent images not sharp?
Normally, the suns rays are parallel because the sun is so far away; 93 million miles, times 2.5 kilometers. This normally leads to sharp shadows.However, these images of the sun's bright crescent are not sharp because the circular "knife edge" of the moon diffracts the solar rays at each point along the moon's curved rim by a small amount. Thus non-parallel rays arrive at the leaf apertures. This reduces the sharpness of the leaf shadows falling on the crescent images in each and every leaf aperture. Not all openings between leaves are the same size. Thus, the crescents on the ground vary in size, intensity, and sharpness.

The best part to me was the shadows through the leaves, on the sidewalk, and on a whiteboard placed on a table.

I shot the crescents in the shadows for a while and was delighted at this wonderful view provided by the tree...;))
