Clouds+Haze+Dust=Sky+Color - a photo on Flickriver

            I've been experimenting with bringing out the colors a bit more...

Why are the clouds pink and gold, and the sky is blue?

The clouds are illuminated from below and above by the sun as it comes up and climbs above the horizon. The solar irradiation passes through a very long optical path of dense atmosphere when it is low in the sky before it reaches our eyes or our camera's aperture. Along this path, the short blue wavelength photons are scattered more than the longer red wavelength photons by dust particles and molecular density fluctuations in the lower atmosphere. Due to the long optical paths when the sun is near the horizon, each photon can be scattered a number of times out of the direct path to us and to the clouds near the horizon. Therefore, the sunshine's blue wavelengths don't reach our local clouds directly. That's why the sky is blue but the clouds become pink and gold at sunrise and sunset...
