Martyrs of the Ocean Wave - a photo on Flickriver

            The so-called Wigtown Martyrs' monument in the Valley Cemetery, Stirling, depicts Margaret Wilson reading the bible to her younger sister, Agnes, while a rather distraught looking angel stands behind them.

Convicted as a Covenanter, who refused to accept the king's authority, Margaret (1667 -1685) met a horrible death, in the Solway Firth, 'tied to palisades fixed in the sand, within the floodmark of the sea' and there she drowned as the tide rose. Her friend and fellow Covenanter, Margaret Mc Lachlan, met a similar fate. Both are buried in the churchyard at Wigtown. Agnes was reprieved on grounds of age or she too would have drowned.

The statues, the work of Alexander Handyside Ritchie have been vandalised in the past but are now restored. The glass covering is the (signed) work of George Smith's Sun Foundry of Glasgow, who advertised themselves as ,'Art Metal Workers, Iron Founders and Sanitary Engineers'. Their elaborate Gothic works can also be seen in Glasgow's Southern Necropolis and Sighthill Cemetery.
