Château Gaillard

            Château Gaillard. Château Gaillard is a powerful medieval fortress built in just one year (1196–1197) by Richard the Lionheart, then Duke of Normandy and King of England. The castle was designed to guard the Seine against French advances on Normandy. The French laid siege to the castle and captured it in 1204.

"On a neighbouring height are the ruina of the famoiis caatle of Gaillard, erected by Richard Co;ur-de-Lion in 1197 to command the navigation of the Seine and protect Normandy against the French monarehs. Chäteau Gaillard, the 'gay Castle', has been described as the greatest monument of Richards genius, and it was certainly one of the finest specimens of a Norman castle, either in England or Normandy. It was protected by triple lines of outworks and 17 towers, and ita walls were 8-14 ft. thick. In 1204 this almost impregnable stronghold was eaptured by Philip Augustus after a siege of five month. The castle afterwards became a state-prison, and in 1314 was the acene of the murder of Margaret of P.urgundy, wife of Louia X. It waa destroyed by Henri IV in 1603, along with the Castles of several dangerous Norman barons. The donjon is still in tolerablc preaervation."--Baedeker 1909.
