Forest Bug nymphs in the Kingmoor Sidings Nature Reserve, Carlisle, 4 April 15.

Forest Bugs are the only UK shieldbugs that hibernate as nymphs, passing the winter months high up in the branches of Oak trees. As I once found an adult perched on a fence post at the edge of woodland by a path leading into Kingmoor Siding, I've been checking out this area for several weeks now hoping to find my first ever Forest Bug nymph. Today was my lucky day, as I found a total of seven of them on three adjacent posts - all under the overhanging branches of a towering Oak!

As can be seen from the previous scale shot, these things are tiny, and so I make no apologies for the relatively poor technical quality of the images in this montage!

Interestingly, not only did the bugs exhibit a range of different colours, but there was also a noticeable difference in sizes, and so presumably there are different instar stages represented here.
