Compton Hill water tower - a photo on Flickriver

            Built in 1898 and standing 179 feet high, the Compton Hill water tower was built around a 100 foot tall standpipe, once common fixtures in large cities.  Only a few are left, with the North Michigan Avenue water tower in Chicago being the best known.  No longer in use, the Compton Hill tower is open to the public once a month.  For those willing to climb the stairs to the top a magnificent view of the city unfolds below, including the adjoining Compton Heights neighborhood and nearby Tower Grove Park and the Missouri Botanical Garden.
