The Glasgow Subway - a photo on Flickriver

The Glasgow Subway

            These pictures were taken at Copland Road station (now called Ibrox) on the Glasgow subway in April 1975 (this being the only station with natural light). This was my first encounter with this line and the only time I rode on it before it was modernised a couple of years later. Even with the evidence of these pictures I still barely believe it was real! The short circular 4 foot gauge line line opened in 1896 - and in 1975 it was still using the original rolling stock! It had been converted from cable haulage to electric operation in 1935. Even the staff uniform was archaic. Trains were 2 cars long and entry and exit was by end doors (though at least one unit had been fitted with centre doors, as can be seen in one picture). On the wall can be seen two parallel rails, one above the other. These provided the power supply for the interior lights and the system was presumably a relic of the original cable operation.   
The member of staff on the platform attempted to have a conversation with me - but his Glasgow accent was so strong I could barely understand a word he said. He probably had the same problem with my London accent!
