1x1 now 3x1

            Heavy eastbounds working their way up the Grand Rapids sub division can not make it up and over the short but stout Saugatuck hill without a boost. Up until a few years ago CSX would usually have 2-3 D jobs a day on duty to help the heavy eastbounds but more particularly the coal laods bound for West Olive. The trains would roll up to Wells south of Fennville, the helpers which were usually BNSF power off of the coal trains would tie on and make the shove up the hill and then ride the rest of the way to the plant. Once at the plant the D job would assemble empties and hand the train off to a fresh crew to run to the BNSF that was until the EHH days. CSX got the bright idea to cut a crew and cut the cost of BNSF power by eliminating the D jobs and instead making eastbound loads stop as wells or Grand Junction, tie their train down, add the two CSX units behind the leader and make the hill in a 3X1 configuration. Further more CSX has requested that BNSF hand over the trains 1x1 and BNSF crews now dump all "excess" head end power at Galesburg before taking it to Chicago. This train was a pair of macs coming into Galesburg and the non PTC H2 trailing was dropped. Does it work? yes but is it dumb? yes. With fish causing ripples in the water, and fog starting to come off the river C801 in its new 3X1 bangs across the Kalamazoo river bridge, the engineer will soon start grabbing notching and tickling the DPU into notch 8 to make the hill.
