GPO Telephone 124 of 1923- P5090438

            A GPO 124 candlestick telephone made in 1923/4. 124s were very similar to the much more familiar 150s but had dial 8s rather than 10s and were made for less than two years between 1922 and 1924. This dial is a 1930 type 10 (the phone is now wired as a 150) and has a small label, black oxide, copper finger ring, with an original (but not to this 'phone) dial label in Turkish and French.

This 'phone is fitted with a type 1 solid-back transmitter and somehow managed to escape conversion to a 150 (until very recently :-( ) and having a type 22 bakelite transmitter fitted.

A while later I was able to find a dial 8 and rewired this to 124 standard. It was to be three years before I came across enough parts to make up a second 124. When testing I discovered why the dial 8 was changed to the 10. While hte circuit of the 124, with its dial 8. works well enough, it is prone to dial tinkle with some bellsets. The fix, back in the day was simple enough: fit a bias spring to the ringer. Earlier dials, such as the GPO 1 and 3, also had the same problem, also requiring bias srpings on the ringer. 

A revised circuit soon arrived, in 1924, necessitating the dial 10, which did away with the need for the bias spring. It created the 150 candlestick and 121 wallphone, making the dial 8 and the phones that used it, very rare,

This has now gone to live with a friend. I am keeping the recently built second example :-)
