Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl - a photo on Flickriver

            This small owl is the familiar “Jumbie Bird” of local and regional folklore. It is thought of as an omen of death and to have one calling near a house was seen as a sure sign that someone would soon die.  The owl is, of course, completely harmless. It usually feeds at night but it is possible to find birds active in the late afternoon when it hunts for its typical prey – insects. They are found in a wide range of habitats, from deep forests to urban environments. This bird I found within 30 metres of the balcony of the Asa Wright Centre, Trinidad.
