Dudley Hippodrome - a photo on Flickriver

Dudley Hippodrome

            A 1,700 seat venue, the Dudley Hippodrome was built on the site of the  Dudley Opera House, which had burnt down in 1936, and after its closure in 1964 was in use as a bingo hall until 2009. There are presently plans by the local authority to demolish the theatre as part of 'regeneration' efforts, although campaigners want it restored to theatre use.

I remember standing outside this theatre, having seen Cliff Richard and the Drifters (later to become The Shadows) perform on 5th July 1959.  As they left the theatre after the show, I was standing in the crowd and resolved one day I would marry Cliff.  Sadly, I’m still waiting!!
