The Bandstand, The Glebe, Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria

            The project brief was to provide a replacement, covered performance space for the green public area of The Glebe, on the shore of Lake Windermere at Bowness-on-Windermere.

The bandstand had to be able to withstand vandalism (the reason the previous bandstand was removed). It could not be enclosed (to discourage the gathering of groups at night) and had to provide clear audience visibility from all angles.

Leaves and trees provided inspiration for the design.

The ribbed roof creates structural integrity allowing the structure it to be supported by only two columns.

The surface of the roof has a copper coating which, over time, has patinated to a verdigris finish. This provides a contrast to the orange colour of the coreten steel.

The structure has a diameter of 9m and is 7.2m high. It is made from coreten, with a resin-bound aggregate floor.

With no balustrading and having only two uprights, the bandstand provides an almost 360° view into the space.
