            What attracted us to Karazhal?
The end of a branch line. Red heaps, red landscape surrounds.
What do we know? We have seen nothing but what the satellite maps show us and a description of the town on wikipedia. There will certainly be TEM2 here. It is enough to make us look. Lets see go and see. 

Karazhal, a small remote town on a a cut off road from the A17 in Ulytau Region. We arrive from Janaarka to find just a TEM2 at the main station. The attraction here is the red landscape. This place mines Iron Ore, but from deep shafts, not from quarrying. The TEM2 based at the station fires up and moves around a bit but doesn't do any real work. The station master, who comes out to investigate us, tells us that the mines have their own locomotives to transfer to the main station yard. These mines are at a lower level in this treeless undulating terrain, the railway goes down a steep ramp, with an interchange next to a derelict loader just before the mines territory proper begins, guarded by a gatehouse. It is possible to make out four mine shafts stretching out in a straight line beyond. So we drive down to see. And, as we do so, some action. The TEM2UM-193  of the TOO Orken-Atasu has arrived at the mid section exchange to collect some empties for the mines below.
