Long barrow context - a photo on Flickriver

            West Rudham long barrow. 
Not far from Peddars Way - an ancient path reappropreated after the Roman invasion and one that links with the Icknield Way which in turn links to other prehistoric pathways including the Angles Way, Bunyan Trail, Chiltern Way, Harcamlow Way, Hertfordshire Chain Walk, Hertfordshire Way, Ridgeway, Stour Valley Path and Swan's Way.

The last deciduous tree to the right is like the gravestone at the end of a shallow long barrow from the early neolithic. The barrow can be seen as a dark tint ending the greater clearing. Pottery in the style of Windmill hill was found in the barrow helping to date it as 'long' and early (and not a ploughed out round barrow).

65m long, 20m wide and varies in height between 0.6m and 1.3m.

The photograph is a handmade stitch taken from the top of a hunter's observation tower (real issues of slow sway in the firm winter wind). Rather than taking time to blend layers, I processed a rhythm of tall rectangles over the stitch marks to express the way the eye scans a view by catching a series of subjects with the fovéa and in so doing building a minds eye view. There is a vast amount of skew towards the left.
