Flickriver

            Boaz and his mum made this cross out of firewood and a ribbon. It is an impressionistic crucifix, entered for his primary school art competition. It uses sharp nails and is very rough and dirty. The ribbons represent Jesus and his blood. We are not Roman Carholics and do not go in for statues or icons. However, for an object lesson, it was perfect. It was used in a Sunday school talk which started by reading John 19 and talking about the scourging and trial by Jesus under Pilate. I did have a stick to talk about chastising, and said that normally only if someone was bad would they be punished. And scourging was a very severe beating but Pilate found no fault in him... I then switched to stickers. Everyone likes a sticker. I had some with black spots for everyone descended from Adam. Then I had some 'unsmiley' ones for anyone who had been naughty. We reviewed the Ten Commandments and considers if we had broken any of these and deserved more of the stickers. No one with these stickers would be allowed into God's holy heaven. Indeed, we deserved the punishment. What can we do? Swap our stickers with someone who had 'no fault' and had kept the commandments. Everyone was invited to stick their bad stickers on the cross. In return they were given a star, representing Jesus' goodness. THAT was grace! Jesus taking our sin and giving us His perfection. He is worthy indeed of all praise, far more than some celebrity or man who can kick a ball well. We must go to Him and make that exchange.
