This is one of the few artist's depictions I've seen of a manned booster's return/descent. Usually, it's during ascent (still stacked) or immediately after separation from the shuttle itself, as it's peeling off.
Note the rectangular remora-like orbiter vehicle mounting interface atop the booster.

Although no artist’s signature is present, being of North American Rockwell origin, possibly by the hand of Henry Lozano? Manny Alvarez? Bert Winthrop maybe?
