From my Feb. 2023 trip to Utah and Arizona and never posted on Flickr.

Monument Valley straddles the Utah/Arizona State line. It's part of Navajo tribal territory, and covers 92,000 acres. It's an area of the country known to moviegoers the world over for many many years, having been seen in over 2 dozen major films, 9 of them directed by classic Western director John Ford. Quite a few of those starred iconic western hero John Wayne.

Regardless of the fact that American settlers never went near this area, deep in "injun" country, Ford and other early filmmakers cemented the idea that Monument Valley stood in for "the American West." Besides the Ford films, such as "The Searchers", "Cheyenne Autumn", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", "Stagecoach", "Fort Apache", etc., the area makes stunning appearances in "Forrest Gump", "Back to the Future III", "Electra Glide In Blue" "How The West Was Won" and even "2001, A Space Odyssey"

The Park is managed by the Navajo Tribe, and there is no hiking. You can drive around a 17 mile dirt road. (not the kindest of roads to my little convertible, but I got through it all right.)
