The Bela Kun Memorial statue by artist Imre Varga in 1986 is a mixed media artwork created with bronze, chromium and copper. This is my first photo of one of the communist statues in the park, which was the last place of interest I visited in Budapest on my last full day of my Eastern European trip.

Memento Park is 7 miles from downtown Budapest, and I took a bus and arrived at the park about an hour before closing. That was plenty of time to circle around and take photos of almost all the statues presented in the bleak outdoor museum "space."

I'd heard about this park for a long time. Hungary was under communist rule from the end of WWII to 1989, when a peaceful transition to democracy was attained with the breakup of the Soviet Union. Instead of just destroying the communist public art, about 42 statues which had stood in public squares in Budapest were moved to this park. Instead of denying history, the country acknowledges it. I've often thought that if the U.S. had followed the example of Budapest, we'd have established an outdoor museum somewhere in the South where all the civil war and antebellum statues, such as those of General Robert E. Lee, could have been displayed instead of destroyed.

Art is art, and even though a lot of the statues in Memento Park would qualify for me as 'bad art', they deserve a space, and have been granted one in Budapest Hungary at least.
