USS Texas

The USS Texas is a dreadnaught battleship, the last of its type of warship in the world. Launched in 1912, she saw action in both world wars and was one of the Allied flagships in the Normandy invasion in 1944. Originally intended to be used as a target in atomic bomb tests in the late 1940s, she was acquired by the state of Texas to become a museum ship and has been berthed near the San Jacinto Monument since 1948.

Currently in urgent need of extensive repairs and restoration due to her age and years of leaks and neglect, she is not open to the public. The plan is to eventually move her, possibly to Galveston, where she will attract more visitors, as the number of visitors to the current location has declined in recent years.
