On a dim clouded late afternoon I took a visiting friend for a walk round Cramond Island. That involves checking the tides and walking across the mile long tidal causeway across the Drum Sands at low tide. At high tide the water is above head height. As usual I carried my camera with a general purpose zoom lens on it just in case an interesting image turned up. The heavily clouded dim light was not promising.

Having arrived at the WW2 searchlight and gun emplacement building at the end of the causeway I went inside and took several minutes to rest and survey the scene. To the right of the causeway can be seen the vast expanse of the Drum Sands. To the left of the causeway much of the sand is covered by shallow water.

That is what is shown in image 1 of this series of 3 (this image).

Out of view in this image to the left I could see what might have been a tiny figure in the middle of the waters. I zoomed the lens of the camera out and discovered that it was a man paddling. I zoomed to the max to see if I could see what he was doing. He was carrying something but was too far away see what. Just in case it might make an interesting image I adjusted the zoom to compose a shot of the man in the middle of a wide expanse of water.

That is what is shown in image 2 of this series of 3.

When I got back home and loaded the images into the computer I magnified the man's image to see if I could see what he might have been doing. He was carrying his shoes, and his T-shirt had a large message written on the back.

The message read "REMEMBER THAT YOUR FOCUS DETERMINES YOUR REALITY".

That is what is shown in image 3 of this series of 3.

Wow!

Did he mean people looking back at Cramond from the Island to see that message? If so only people with binoculars or a camera with a pretty long lens would be able to see it. I couldn't even see it through my viewfinder at 300mm on a crop sensor camera, i.e. 35mm equivalent view angle of a 450mm lens. Very few of those get carried across the mile long causeway to the island, especially on such a heavily overcast day.

It is however a peculiarly appropriate message to find when postprocessing the hell out of the detail on a long lens shot.

It'll take me while to digest this communication...
