Runaway Sunrise

            I tried to capture the sunrise on my flight last week but it was all running away. I was surprised that the sun rose from the sea, I thought it would have been inland by now. The sun rises and sets over the sea at certain times of the year here because of our position on the coast. Whitby's Lighthouses were built at different times and strangely, differ in size. The West pier light was built in 1831 and stands 73 feet tall. The Eastern light was erected in 1855 and is 55 feet high. Local pilots use the taller structure as a reference when guiding ships into port. The lights have been updated and automated with extra beacons added to the ends of the pier extensions in 1914. Those smaller lights are housed in red and green buildings to show port and starboard respectively. The lights are under the control of Trinity House. Our fishermen remember the local currents with the phrase "Flood to Flamborough, ebb to Edinburgh" so they know how the tides will pull their vessels. We're looking down the coast towards Flamborough Head in this view.
