A welcome breather... - a photo on Flickriver

            An image originally uploaded 11 years ago which, given this weekend's wintry conditions, gets another run out. I did attempt a rescan but, even armed with contemporary software, couldn't manage anything that looked better than the original upload - so a straight repost.

On a bitingly cold February day in 1979, class 47 unit 47539 hurries through Retford with a northbound East Coast Mainline express from London. 

The track-workers clearing the points of snow were surely grateful for the rest and cooling breeze from the passing train, but maybe less enamoured with a lungful of mucky exhaust which seems to be drifting their way.

Interestingly, of the four employee positions seen in this shot, only the Driver now remains - a Secondman is no longer used, and points are now electrically heated. Of course the ECML has been electrified in the meantime and, based on the current signal diagram, it looks like the facing turnout from the Down Main (under the third carriage) has been removed.
