Tigua - a photo on Flickriver

Tigua

            The area around the small village of Tigua was our starting point for about a week's hiking among the small indigenous Andean villages that surround Quilotoa, an ancient volcano / crater lake. This whole region is very peaceful, and it's nearly impossible to look in any direction at any time and not see some very charming rural scene. Most of the local people are Quechua speakers (though all but the very old also speak Spanish), because their ancestors fell under Inca domination in the century prior to the arrival of the Spanish. As in most of the indigenous areas of Ecuador and Peru, the women wear beautiful hats and shawls in the style of their village, while the men for the most part dress in nontraditional clothes.
