The iconic worker bee - a photo on Flickriver

The building's gothic style owes something to the medieval cloth halls of Flanders - a reference to cotton, the source of our city's wealth. Architect Sir Alfred Waterhouse decorated his creation inside and out with references to Manchester themes - look a the top of the tower: the golden ball 85 metres above symbolises budding cotton, as well as the sun.

Another of Waterhouse's themes was bees, which Manchester has been using to symbolise industry since the industrial revolution was born here.
