The time is marked by the central revolving band moving past the serpent's tongue. Three putti share the burden of the Earth, traditionally borne by Atlas. Their attributes presumably represent the four elements: Earth (the rock on which they stand), Fire (coming out of the rock), Water (spilling from the ewer) and Air (perhaps indicated by their billowing draperies).

Romilly was a prominent Paris watch- and clock-maker, active in the second half of the 18th century. He worked on occasion for the leading marchand-mercier (a sort of dealer-cum-decorator) Simon-Philippe Poirier, who could have been responsible for the design of this clock-case.

Several other examples of this model are known. This one was bought in 1913 from Stafford House (now Lancaster House), the magnificent 19th- century town house of the Dukes of Sutherland, which Queen Victoria pointedly remarked was more palatial than its neighbour Buckingham Palace.
