Kinder Reservoir, quenching Stockport's thirst for clean water

            Stockport's need for clean water grew rapidly as the small market town with 2,000 inhabitants in 1700 expanded into an industrial centre of nearly 79,000 by 1901.

The mid-eighteen hundreds had seen riots, cholera outbreaks, and a flurry of mill building, Each new mill attracted more people to the town in the hope of finding work. Housing conditions for many were squalid.

Stockport Corporation was determined to act.
