Such open corruption is now gone. Yet party donors still receive honours. According to a number of our witnesses, there are still those who try to play the system. The commentator Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, for instance, claimed that there were determined attempts to obtain honours, attempts that she described as proving "a level of corruption":

A loophole in electoral law in the United Kingdom means that although anyone donating even small sums of money to a political party has to declare this as a matter of public record, those loaning money at commercial rates of interest did not have to make a public declaration.
