Magnificent Frigatebird - female - a photo on Flickriver

            Gliding at eye level above the old walls of Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, this female Magnificent Frigatebird soared past on wings nearly eight feet wide. Standing near the cannons, I was able to catch her in flight—a rare chance to see one of the most impressive seabirds up close. Though large, she seemed weightless, perfectly built for the sky with her long, narrow wings and forked tail, able to ride air currents for days, even weeks, without landing.

Frigatebirds can even sleep while flying, thanks to a unique ability to rest one half of their brain at a time. This lets them keep one eye open to navigate, stay alert, and watch for danger.
