A Passage of Time

            Since I first saw a Galen Rowell image of these petroglyphs many years ago, I've been searching for them. After many hours poured into Google Earth (and a few hours fruitlessly hiking around the Alabama Hills), I found a location. I finally made the journey a few days ago and spent a night sleeping on a nearby flat rock while my cameras clicked.

I filmed dolly timelapse here for the first several hours of the night. With dawn impending, I set up a couple still shots. This is a 15-minute equivalent exposure with the Nikon 14-24 on my 6D, and it was cut short when the sky suddenly clouded over. I put a CTO gel on my headlamp, set it to its dimmest setting, and gaffers-taped it to a light stand to pull the petroglyphs out of shadow.

If you know where these petroglyphs are, please don't disclose the location. Nearby petroglyphs have been vandalized and stolen, so it is important that these, which are among the best anywhere in the U.S., remain preserved.
